In addition to their roles as messengers and guardians, angels also punish wrongdoers. Originally armed with a shield and sword, the Archangel Michael is the celestial warrior who crushes the devil, depicted here in the form of a dragon. As a Christian conflict, the group refers to the battle between good and evil.
