This frieze may have once been part of a door frame or the base of a stupa. Each Buddha is seated in an identical manner in the classic mediation posture on a lotus seat, with various hand gestures (mudras). Very likely these seven figures represent the five Buddhas of the past, along with Shakyamuni, the Buddha of the present, and Maitreya, the Buddha of the future.
