Ganesha is often worshipped as the remover of obstacles. His good graces must be sought at the start of any new undertaking, and he is often invoked at the very beginning of prayers and festivals. When bronze images of Shiva and his family are taken out of the temple for processions, Ganesha is carried at the front of the group, followed by images of Shiva, Parvati, and his brother, Skanda.
