Small Village: Gerberoy
1937
Henri Le Sidaner (French, 1862-1939)
Not on View

Although Henri Le Sidaner was studying painting under the staunchly academic Alexander Cabanel by the age of twenty, he soon abandoned the tight rigidity of his master’s technique for the loose expressions of the contemporary Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. Well-traveled in Europe and even America, Le Sidaner finally settled in the small village of Gerberoy in 1900. It is in this picturesque medieval town where the artist found the subject for many of his most charming landscapes. This vision of the village enveloped in lavender hues punctuated by the occasional sparkle of warm yellow brilliantly captures the poetic shifts of light in the gloaming.
