Young Man with Red Beret
c. 1629-1630
Jan Lievens (Dutch, 1607-1674)
On View

The costumed young man here was intended not as a portrait but as a tronie, the term given to bust studies of an expression or an historical type, removed from their narrative context. Such face paintings illustrate an integral part of the training for young artists as they honed their skills in rendering expression, design and costume. By the 17th century, however, paintings of tronies became popular as autonomous work of art. There was a lively market for them and they featured prominently in the inventories of the period. The imagination and visual interest of this youth underscores the popularity of such figures. With his brocaded, garnet-colored cloak, velvet beret and gold-threaded scarf he cuts quite the exotic figure.
