Painted near the end of Corot’s career, this landscape was first exhibited at his posthumous retrospective in 1875. The thatched cottage and white-coiffed peasant women belong to the countryside of Normandy, where the aging artist had made several stops during a whirlwind journey across France in 1872. He would have completed this canvas, working from sketches and from memory, back in his Paris studio. Somewhat unusually for Corot, the foreground figures were not added last to lend scale to the building and trees but planned from the beginning and left in reserve, true protagonists of the picture.
