Education, Education and Public Programs Assistant, Part Time
Summary
The Norton Simon Museum seeks a part-time Education and Public Programs Assistant to join its small but dynamic Education and Public Programs Department. The position provides administrative and planning support, including assisting with a range of weekend events such as adult art and education classes, programs for children and youth, and lectures and concerts held in our theater. The position also works directly with the public, Museum educators, and the artists, musicians and speakers contracted to lead programs at the Museum. The ideal candidate has a strong interest in museum work and the visual arts. Prior experience in event planning or public programming is preferred.
Qualifications
- B.A. degree in art history, art education, museum studies, humanities, or a related field is required
- Experience in planning live music events and public programs
- Strong ability to collaborate and follow direction
- Positive attitude with a proactive approach
- Detail-oriented with strong follow-through and creativity
- One year of office experience is preferred
- Experience working within a museum, cultural, or educational setting is preferred
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Strong computer skills are essential
Responsibilities
- Assist with lectures, concerts, adult drawing classes, dance performances, Evening in Focus events, and children’s art-making programs
- Assists with rentals and logistics for events
- Assists with logistics for lectures, including day-of assistance, and managing hotel bookings and reimbursement
- Takes initiative with musical programs, including conducting research, contacting artists and day-of assistance
- Updates database with upcoming events, processes purchase orders and check requests
- Updates the Public Programs calendar
- Liaises with Theater Technicians for events
- Assists the Education and Public Programs Coordinator with answering the Education phone line
- Prepare signs and other graphic materials for events, as needed
- Performs additional duties or special projects, as assigned
Physical Requirements
This position requires some moderate lifting, stretching, reaching, bending and occasional long periods of standing. Ability to lift 15 pounds.
Schedule
Position is scheduled to work 20 hours per week. Friday evenings and weekend shifts are required.
