Campbell's Soup Can on Shopping Bag
1966
Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987)
Not on View

The image of a Campbell’s soup can has become synonymous with Andy Warhol. In 1966, an exhibition dedicated to Warhol opened at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, and these screen-printed shopping bags were printed exclusively to commemorate the show. Campbell’s Soup Can on Shopping Bag does not appear on the ICA’s archived exhibition checklist, but it does appear in the catalogue raisonné for Warhol’s prints. The soup can that appears on this bag is similar to all the others Warhol had made before and those that came after. It is this imbrication of fine art and commerce that Warhol relished and employed in his work.
