On view

In the 1930s, Braque began a series of extensive interior views occasionally inhabited by figures. Here a mixture of sand and paint roughens the surface, lending it a dense, tactile quality. The organization of patterns and textures achieves the effect of tapestry. Braque has retained such Cubist devices as overlapping planes, superimposed forms, and geometrical abstractions. The treatment of light and space is, however, almost naturalistic. The calligraphic patterns of the wallpaper are echoed in the delineation on the model's abdomen as well as in the rounded contours of the easel.
