Renoir's only studio group portrait records an informal conversation among his friends in his Montmartre studio. The central figure holding a book and appearing to lead the discussion is the art critic and Renoir's biographer, Georges Rivière. The bald, bearded man partially hidden to the right is painter Camille Pissarro. Less definite are the identities of the other three men. The animated, delicate brushwork that dances over the surface is typical of Renoir's works of this period.
