One of the most vivid, recurring motifs throughout Picasso's career was the female head. In this late pastel, Picasso reached back to his early Cubist preoccupations with simultaneous representation of the object. The speed with which he recorded his idea for this head is evident in the sometimes sketchy, sometimes rough use of pastel on board. His colors, no doubt, have as much emotional as decorative value and bear no allegiance to reality.
