Along with other Nabi artists, including Odilon Redon, Édouard Vuillard and Ker-Xavier Roussel, Georges Lacombe was concerned with capturing the ideal landscape and the world beyond reality. The women in this picture—all modeled by the artist’s fiancée—float through an imagined world of Breton tradition and legend. The rhythmic, flattened pattern of the forest floor, coupled with the serenity of the female figures suggests a solemnity reserved for religious processions rather than backbreaking labor. The painting was part of a series representing the four seasons, and it was intended as a gift for the home of Madame Gabrielle Wenger, the mother of his fiancée.
