Over his long career, Oskar Kokoschka made dozens of portraits, several of them in series. This portrait of Ruth Landshoff (1904–1966) may have been intended for an unrealized portfolio entitled “Daughters of the Covenant,” which was to feature a group of five Jewish women. The sitter strikes a peculiar pose because she is listening to music—her thoughts, as her physical self, are transported elsewhere. The certainty of Kokoschka’s black lines stems from his extensive experiments with graphic work, and his confidence deploying oil crayon on a lithograph stone shows in the colored brushwork of his contemporaneous painted portraits.
