Kirchner was one of the great leaders of German Expressionism as a painter, graphic artist, sculptor, and photographer. He co-founded the artists' group Die Brücke (The Bridge), intended to be a bridge to a new international position for German art. The depiction of this passive forest landscape is enlivened by the rich colors laid down in large, thick, and lengthy strokes. Marking a pivotal point in the artist's career, this painting bridges the transformation between Kirchner's more decorative, French-influenced divisionist style and the full-fledged expressionist style he developed within Die Brücke group beginning in 1907.
