Not on View

Though Claire Falkenstein was perhaps best known for her large-scale, forged metal sculpture, the Los Angeles–based artist employed a wide variety of media for her artistic experiments. Working in two and three dimensions, using clay, wood, metal, glass and paper, Falkenstein was very interested in the intersection between the functionality of an object and its aesthetic value. These two ostensibly opposing forces, she decided early in her career, were not and should not be mutually exclusive. With that ethos, she built, painted, drew and crafted hundreds of works. Many of them are based on an open linear structure; this might be wire and metal tubing or the delicately flowing reddish-black ink mirroring her painted design on a lithograph stone.
