Noland was born in North Carolina and attended art school at Black Mountain College, where Josef Albers (1888-1976) was Art Department Head and Ilya Bolotowsky (1907-1981) was teaching. In 1962, Noland moved to New York and began to experiment with a chevron-shaped motif. "Color Temperature" is part of this series dedicated to V-shaped bands of color. The diamond-shaped canvas format pays homage to both Mondrian and Bolotowsky.
