This Buddha figure is from the ancient Mon kingdom of Haripunjaya in central Thailand. The artists of this region created a distinct type of Buddha image, of which this is a fine example. Salient characteristics of Buddha images from Haripunjaya include a square jaw, a wide mouth with thick lips, deeply incised lines to suggest a moustache and downcast eyes, and hair curls that resemble pointed cones.
