This festive scene probably depicts the spring festival known as Holi, which is celebrated with dancing, merrymaking and the sprinkling of brightly colored powders. A prince and his attendants watch a music and dance performance while a princess observes the festivities from the rooftop above. The couple’s royal status is indicated by the peacock feather fans, known as morchals, used by their attendants.
