Galka Scheyer (b. Germany, 1889–d. Los Angeles, 1945) was a collector, dealer, curator, and above all, a dedicated champion of European modernism. As the founder and representative of the group of artists known as the Blue Four, Scheyer was instrumental in bringing European modernism to California. For close to thirty years she collected and promoted early twentieth century art, first in San Francisco and then in Los Angeles, where she lived from 1925 until her death. In 1953 Scheyer’s entire collection, including her archive, came to the Pasadena Art Museum and now resides at the Norton Simon Museum. Her charismatic presence and her personal relationships with so many living artists inspired dozens of portraits. The selection that is presented here offers several different views of this significant supporter of avant-garde twentieth-century art.
