Administration, General Counsel, Full Time
Summary
The Norton Simon Entities, comprised of the Norton Simon Museum, the Norton Simon Art Foundation and The Norton Simon Foundation, seeks a General Counsel to join its executive team. Reporting to the President/CEO, the General Counsel is an experienced attorney responsible for overseeing the organization’s legal matters, including compliance with non-profit, employment and intellectual property law, and with tax-related and contractual obligations.
Responsibilities:
- Advise the Boards of Trustees, President/CEO and executive team on all legal matters to ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations; review and refine organizational policies
- Advise the Boards and President/CEO on organizational governance matters
- Draft, review and lead the negotiation of all contracts and agreements for the Norton Simon Entities
- Provide legal advice on risk management and insurance program in close collaboration with the executive team, insurance broker and outside counsel
- Observe organizational policies and procedures and recommend updates to reflect evolving best practices
- Advise on legal issues related to provenance, loans, publications, intellectual property matters, data security and privacy, and other art-related matters affecting Norton Simon Entities operations and strategy
Qualifications
- Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA accredited law school and a member in good standing of the California State bar
- At least five years of legal experience with expertise in several of the following areas: art law, corporate governance, non-profit law, labor and employment law, and tax compliance
- Experience at a major law firm required; additional experience at a museum or nonprofit organization preferred
Physical Requirements
This position is in an indoor office setting, with frequent use of office equipment including computer, keyboard, and mouse. This position may involve extended periods of sitting and standing, as well as moderate lifting, stretching, reaching, and bending.
Schedule
This is a full-time, exempt position scheduled to work on-site Monday - Friday from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience, and includes excellent benefits, including medical, dental, vision and life insurance and a generous pension program.
