Venezuelan artist Gego (born Gertrud Goldschmidt in Germany) is best known for geometric compositions that she called “drawings without paper.” Working in a variety of mediums, Gego aimed to convey a sense of volume using line rather than traditional methods of modeling or shading. In Untitled striated white lines break through a matte navy background, evoking the oscillation of sound waves.
Throughout her practice, Gego sought to associate lines with their surroundings: “I discovered the charm of the line in and of itself—the line in space as well as the line drawn on a surface, and the nothing between the lines and the sparking when they cross, when they are interrupted, when they are of different colors or different types. I discovered that sometimes the in-between lines are as important as the line by itself.”
