By the time he became an artist-fellow at Tamarind in 1968, Michael Mazur had worked in a variety of printmaking media. He is perhaps best known for reviving the monotype through his work and through his teaching at the Rhode Island School of Design and at Brandeis University. Like most American printmakers at the time, he was inspired by an Edgar Degas monotype show mounted at Harvard in 1968, and soon thereafter included the technique in his teaching and artistic repertoire. Mazur’s work was not limited to one technique, and his lithographs made at Tamarind reflect a seasoned comfort with the medium. In this, and in a series of other works depicting areas of Los Angeles (Venice Boulevard, Griffith Park and Melrose Avenue, among others), the artist made his drawing on transfer paper, which was then cut and transferred to the stone as a collage. Rubbing ink was applied with a nylon mesh, and a mixture of tusche and solvent was airbrushed on the plate, enhancing the ethereal quality of the drawing.
