In Memory of St. Vincent School
1960
Llyn Foulkes (American, 1934-)
Not on View

Foulkes' mixed-media paintings are distinguished by their dark content and social references to the cultural horrors and fallacies surrounding the concept of the "American Dream." In this work, Foulkes has included a portion of a scorched blackboard and chair he found while sifting through a school building that had been destroyed by fire in South Central Los Angeles. The somber, haunting quality of the objects recalled the devastation Foulkes had encountered while serving in the military in post-World War II Germany.
