Jeff Jamieson: I met Bob through the Chinati Foundation, when he was working on the Dawn to Dusk piece in the very beginning. My meeting was through trying to understand this new work he'd proposed. The relationship with Bob went from that first meeting all the way through until this last October. We did lots of projects. And I specialized in the scrim projects and some light and space pieces.
Electric light is a medium. I think it's part of the piece, the way you experience the disc, I would say, in that it shows you the light in the room when it's working well and done well. And whether it's artificial or natural light, both are used by Bob to make the disc shine and hum in a way, I would say. I think he found over time that he started with trying to make them with natural light and make that work, realized that that wasn't going to be possible in all gallery situations. So he was willing to try different ways. That's how he came up with this four light system. But then later on when there was more resources and different rooms and people were interested in showing them and keeping them active, let's say, he was able to modulate his way of lighting to highlight the discs. They can exist in all kinds of different lighting situations where they still do their thing.
