Vija Celmins moved from Indianapolis to Venice, California, in 1962 and began her MFA at UCLA. There, under John Paul Jones, she had her first brief experience with printmaking, drawing on a copper plate. Around 1967 Celmins turned to drawing, using her photographs of the ocean and new satellite images of the lunar surface as her inspiration and moving away from her loose pop aesthetic. She later looked to the night sky to explore similar tensions between surface and depth, movement and stillness. Celmins made lithographs at Tamarind Lithography Workshop and Cirrus Editions, using her drawings as visual references. She found lithography to be lacking in dimensionality, once referring to it as a “flat kind of process,” and so turned to intaglio.
