Virtual: Bay Area Abstraction: Production and Reception
DATE:
TIME:
11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Speaker:
Elizabeth Buhe, Art Historian and Critic

Postwar San Francisco cultivated a cohort of energetic young artists working abstractly, including Frank Lobdell, Sam Francis and Jay DeFeo, with Claire Falkenstein and Clyfford Still representing the prior generation as teachers. In this virtual lecture, Elizabeth Buhe examines the art of such Bay Area artists as well as the favorable conditions surrounding its production and transatlantic afterlife. She gives specific focus to the logic of the critical terms levied to describe it, like non-figuration, abstraction, San Francisco School and École du Pacifique.

Held over Zoom, with a Q&A period moderated by Chief Curator Emily Talbot.

This live, virtual program is organized in conjunction with the exhibition Alternate Realities: Altoon, Diebenkorn, Lobdell, Woelffer.
