Karel Appel

The first major exhibition for Karel Appel (1921–2006) on the West Coast, this show traveled to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Phoenix Art Museum, Santa Barbara Art Museum, Seattle Art Museum and La Jolla Art Museum after its debut at the Pasadena Art Museum. Forty-eight oil paintings and gouaches were displayed, such as Hidden Head (1960) and Entendons Nous (1959). Thirty-six art dealers and museums lent works to the exhibition, most notably the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art and the Stedelijk Museum. The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue.
