Kurt Schwitters
This solo exhibition for the German-born artist Kurt Schwitters (1887–1948) was organized by The Museum of Modern Art in New York, with works primarily drawn from their collection alongside loans from several lenders in California. After the first venue at the Pasadena Art Museum, the exhibition traveled to the Currier Gallery of Art, New Hampshire; the Phillips Collection, Washington D.C.; and the University of Minnesota. The display featured 86 works by Schwitters—mainly collages, but also drawings, one watercolor and a few inlaid wooden boxes, which are included in the illustrated catalogue produced for the occasion. Several works from this exhibition—including Lust Murder Box, No. 2 (1920–22); Mz 289. Erfurt (1921); and Mz 457 (1921)—are held in the Norton Simon Museum collection.
