Painting by James Strombotne
Born in South Dakota, James Strombotne (b. 1934) studied at Pomona College and received an MFA from Claremont Graduate School. This exhibition displayed 31 works by the young artist, including 20 oils and 11 drawings. Many of the paintings were large in scale, with one work, Descent, measuring 6 by 12 feet long. As an artist, Strombotne concentrated heavily on themes of violence, warfare and societal inequality. The paintings in this show included references to Christian themes of salvation, while simultaneously criticizing political figures like Winston Churchill.
