Paintings by Hilda Levy
Born in Russia, Hilda Levy (1908–2001) enjoyed a successful career as a Southern Californian artist. Following her arrival to the US, Levy studied at institutions including UCLA, USC and the Jepson Art Institute. She held several one-woman shows through the 1950s and participated in exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Art, National Museum of Canada and the US Library of Congress. This exhibition at the Pasadena Art Museum featured 44 recent works that combined rhythmic, abstract lines with explorations of color and form. Beyond the traditional materials of oil paint and watercolor, Levy also experimented with industrial materials like lacquer and Masonite to produce works with shiny, reflective surfaces. Works on display in this exhibition included Origins III, Fluctuation, Innerness, Metamorphosis and Forms in Blue Space.
