Paintings by Richard Diebenkorn
This exhibition held at the Pasadena Art Museum was the first large-scale display of Richard Diebenkorn’s (1922–1993) work in California. It showcased over 10 years of his work, including 2 watercolors, 2 gouaches, 1 oil and gouache on paper and 61 oils on canvas. Diebenkorn himself lent many of the objects on view, with additional loans from private collectors and the artist’s then dealer, Elinor Poindexter. The artist’s participation in organizing the show allowed him to display his most recent figurative work alongside the celebrated abstract paintings for which he was most known. In gratitude for the exhibition, Diebenkorn gifted his painting Bottles (1960) to the museum. It is currently held in the Norton Simon Museum collection.
