Robert Irwin
Born in Long Beach, California, Robert Irwin (1928–2023) spent two years traveling and training in Europe before returning to Southern California, where he gained considerable recognition as a promising young painter. This solo exhibition featured 24 square-format paintings made from thick, luxuriant pigments that showed the artist’s preoccupation with texture. The installation sorted the canvases by size, with the first gallery displaying 6 larger compositions and the second gallery focusing on smaller works ranging in size from 8 by 8 inches to 18 by 11 inches.
