Spanning from the early 1770s to the late 1820s, Goya’s six decades of artist production overlap with one of the most turbulent periods in the history of European art. This wide-ranging lecture takes the title of the exhibition—"I Saw It"—as a point of departure, and asks, "Exactly what did Goya see, and how did those experiences shape his art?" There is no better place to seek answers to these questions than in the extraordinary print series that comprise the exhibition.
Presented in conjunction with the exhibition, I Saw It: Francisco de Goya, Printmaker, on view April 19 through August 5, 2024.
