Lecture: New Light on an Old Masterpiece: Théodore Rousseau’s “Morning Effect"
Scott Allan, Associate Curator of Paintings, J. Paul Getty Museum
November 5, 2016
This lecture focuses on one of the principal highlights of the exhibition Unruly Nature: The Landscapes of Théodore Rousseau (J. Paul Getty Museum, June 21–September 11, 2016). Exhibition co-curator Scott Allan situates the Norton Simon Museum’s Morning Effect, c. 1850, within Rousseau’s career and examines its contentious reception in the Paris Salon. He also tells the story of its impressive provenance, from the court of Napoléon III in France to Gilded Age New York, at a time when Rousseau’s works were among the most sought after in the world.
